Assassin’s Creed’s multiplayer has always worked hard to be both accessible to casual gamers and appealing to the hardcore players. With Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, the addition of Game Lab is taking the accessibility and, well, sheer awesomeness of the numerous multiplayer modes to a new level. Game Lab is your chance as a player to build the mode you want to play by tweaking over 200 parameters, such as scoring, ability sets, time limits, weapons and so much more. Lead Multiplayer Game Designer Tim Browne walked us through the six main modes, along with Wolfpack mode and the new Game Lab feature.
FREE-FOR-ALL MODES
Deathmatch
The first of the free-for-all modes, Deathmatch, is played in smaller maps and lookalikes are turned off. “In some of the modes you play it’s deliberately tricky because some of the NPCs look like the players. In Deathmatch there are no lookalikes, which makes it a little easier.
Wanted
Wanted is perhaps the first mode that pops into your head when you think of Assassin’s Creed multiplayer. Like Deathmatch you are given contracts, but unlike Deathmatch you are working with the full map, lookalikes are turned on and you have a compass to help you find your mark.
Assassinate
“Assassinate is the only mode where you’re not given targets. There are lookalikes and you have to work out from the way people move who the player is and who the NPCs are,” Browne explains.
TEAM MODES
Manhunt
Manhunt is the fan-favorite. The mode is split into two rounds. In one round you will be the hunter and in the second you swap and become the prey. The hunter’s role is pretty self-explanatory. “The hunters track down the prey and the prey need to score points by either stunning the hunters, defending themselves or hiding together – that’s the key way to making the most points. If you hide together or you’re blended in hidden groups your points just keep ticking up.” It’s the hunter’s job to stop you from scoring those points. There’s a feeling of pride that comes from being hunted and having to gain points tactically.
Artifact Assault
Artifact Assault is Capture the Flag with a killer twist. “You have to go into the enemy territory and steal their artifact and make it back to your base. Meanwhile your enemy is doing the same thing.” The team with the highest score of captured artifacts wins. You won’t be able to kill when you’re in enemy territory, so you’ll need to rely on stuns and quick escapes.
Domination
If Artifact Assault is Assassin’s Creed’s Capture the Flag, then Domination is Capture the Flag meets Tug o’ War. The goal is to capture and defend the most neutral territories. The more you own, the more you push the gauge located at the top of the screen.
While Artifact Assault is all about racing back and forth between your base and the enemy base, Domination requires a bit more finesse. There’s an air of danger when you have to remain in a small area as your capture meter fills. Then of course you have to maintain control of your area, which is no easy feat.
WOLFPACK
Wolfpack is the multiplayer co-op mode introduced in Assassin’s Creed III, designed to foster teamwork without the competition. This team mode requires players to work together to take down NPCs in a time limit. Synchronized assassinations aren’t necessary but if you don’t time your kills well the other targets will flee, wasting precious time as you hunt them down to finish the job. Black Flag introduces a story for Wolfpack, which doubles as a sort of tutorial. “It’s kind of a revenge story but I don’t want to give too much away and spoil it. The story helps introduce all the different sequences and what’s involved in Wolfpack to make you a better player so you can work with up to three other players cooperatively in this specific mode,” Browne explains.
As you kill your way through the map, bonus targets will crop up. Kill them for a little more (often desperately needed) time. Sometimes the timer will stop and you’ll need to guard treasure chests from NPC targets. There will be a meter ticking down as these NPCs wear away at your loot’s defenses. Luckily you will be immediately alerted to the presence of someone trying their luck at your treasure. Be mindful of strange translucent shapes in the air. Some of the NPCs can turn invisible and that shape is what gives them away.
GAME LAB MODES
Detailing a custom Wanted mode called Frantic, which makes every action worth only one point. Assassinations, stuns, escapes, and other actions are all worth the same amount. Points rack up quickly in this fast-paced experiment. Browne also points to Pistolier as another custom mode that’s gaining popularity.
Pistolier takes away players’ ability to perform melee kills, forcing them to rely on – you guessed it – their pistols. There’s a cooldown time on your pistol, so missing your target can often cost you. Also, when you lock onto your contract they will see a target symbol appear above their head, giving them the opportunity to throw up a shield for a few brief seconds and make their escape.
